Samara Factory Kitchen

Ekaterina Maksimova · Samara, Russia · 1932

Ekaterina Maksimova designed Samara’s factory kitchen in the plan shape of a hammer and sickle, turning Soviet political symbolism into a functional diagram for mass catering. Kitchen and technical functions occupied the hammer while dining rooms and public facilities filled the curved sickle wing. Large windows, roof terraces and undecorated façades gave the complex a clear constructivist character. Built in 1932 for the Maslennikov factory, the building later suffered alteration before a major restoration and conversion into a branch of the State Tretyakov Gallery, giving one of Russia’s rare surviving factory kitchens a new cultural life.
