SALT Galata

Alexandre Vallaury · Istanbul, Turkey · 2011

SALT Galata occupies the former Ottoman Bank headquarters, a late-nineteenth-century building by Alexandre Vallaury that combines neoclassical and orientalist elements on Istanbul’s historic Bankalar Caddesi. Its 2011 conversion by Mimarlar Tasarım / Han Tümertekin transformed the banking interiors into exhibition, archive, library and public spaces while retaining the building’s major spatial and decorative features. The project is significant as an adaptive reuse that treats a highly charged financial monument as contemporary civic infrastructure for research and culture rather than as a static historic interior.
