Saint Joseph's Oratory

Dalbé Viau; Alphonse Venne; Paul Bellot · Montreal, Canada · 1967

Saint Joseph's Oratory developed over several decades on the slopes of Mount Royal. Its monumental stairs, terraces and large domed basilica turn approach and ascent into central parts of the pilgrimage experience. Architects including Dalbé Viau, Alphonse Venne and Paul Bellot contributed to the complex, completed in its principal form in 1967. The building combines different architectural languages across its exterior and interior. Views back toward Montreal explain how the sanctuary's elevated position contributes to its religious and metropolitan presence. Visiting: General basilica access is free. Museum, parking and special activities may be charged separately.
