SAHMRI
Woods Bagot · Adelaide, Australia · 2013
SAHMRI is a highly expressive medical research building whose faceted form is wrapped in a triangulated skin of glass and articulated sunshades. Woods Bagot raised much of the building above ground on sculptural supports, creating a shaded public realm beneath while giving research floors broad views and daylight. The diagrid-like exterior responds to solar orientation rather than functioning only as visual pattern. Opened in 2013, SAHMRI became an immediate landmark in Adelaide’s biomedical precinct and a strong example of environmental systems generating architectural identity.
