Rwanda Cricket Stadium
Light Earth Designs · Kigali, Rwanda · 2017
Rwanda Cricket Stadium in Gahanga is one of the most distinctive contemporary sports buildings in Africa. Designed by Light Earth Designs, the project uses thin masonry vaults made from compressed earth tiles to create a series of sheltering forms overlooking the cricket ground. Its architecture is important because it combines sports infrastructure with material experimentation, local labor, and environmental thinking. The vaults provide shade, identity, and structural elegance while reducing the need for high-carbon construction systems. The project also reflects Rwanda’s post-genocide social rebuilding by creating a civic place for sport, gathering, and international connection. For ArchiAtlas, the stadium is important because it expands the architectural category of sports facilities beyond large commercial arenas. It demonstrates that a modest stadium can become a landmark through craft, structure, and landscape. Its vaulted forms make the building both technically innovative and emotionally generous within Kigali’s growing urban region. It should be reviewed on site as architecture, urban artifact, and cultural evidence rather than as a tourist attraction alone, because its importance comes from the relationship between form, use, construction, memory, and public life.
