Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas

Mikhail Preobrazhensky · Nice, France · 1912

The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas is one of the most striking religious buildings in Nice and a powerful reminder of the city’s historic connection with the Russian aristocracy. Designed by Mikhail Preobrazhensky and completed in the early twentieth century, the cathedral uses a neo-Russian architectural language that contrasts sharply with the Mediterranean urban fabric around it. Its onion domes, polychrome tilework, carved details, and richly layered silhouette create a deliberately foreign presence, almost like a fragment of Moscow or Saint Petersburg transplanted to the Riviera. The building’s plan, iconostasis, and ornamental program express Orthodox ritual traditions while also functioning as a monument to the Russian community that wintered in Nice. Architecturally, it is worth visiting for its material intensity, roofscape, and ceremonial composition, especially because it shows how international patronage shaped the architectural identity of the Côte d’Azur.
