Royal Collections Gallery

Mansilla + Tuñón Arquitectos · Madrid, Spain · 2023

The Royal Collections Gallery fits a major new museum into the steep western edge of Madrid's royal precinct. Mansilla + Tuñón organized its galleries as long, clear levels behind a rhythmic stone façade that reads as a retaining edge below the palace and cathedral. Opened to the public in 2023, the building negotiates a sensitive relationship between monumental architecture, archaeological remains and the landscape of Campo del Moro. Its strength lies in section as well as elevation: visitors move through substantial changes in level while the exhibition rooms retain a calm, continuous spatial order. Visiting: The museum is ticketed. Its entrance is beside the Royal Palace precinct.
