Rose Seidler House
Harry Seidler · Sydney, Australia · 1950
Rose Seidler House was Harry Seidler’s first major Australian commission and a decisive introduction of European and American modernism to post-war Sydney. The elevated rectilinear volume uses an open plan, floor-to-ceiling glazing, a free-standing fireplace and carefully integrated furniture to establish a new model of domestic living. Set within a bushland site rather than a conventional suburban garden, the house combines International Style planning with a strong relationship to landscape. Completed in 1950 for Seidler’s parents, it is now preserved as a house museum.
