Romanian Athenaeum
Albert Galleron · Bucharest, Romania · 1888
The Romanian Athenaeum is a circular concert hall fronted by a monumental Corinthian portico and capped by a prominent dome. Albert Galleron organized the main auditorium as a richly decorated horseshoe-like room surrounded by ceremonial foyers and stairs, while the exterior gives the relatively compact building an unusually strong civic presence. Completed in 1888 through a combination of public and private fundraising, the Athenaeum became closely associated with Romanian national culture and classical music. Its combination of neoclassical exterior and elaborate interior makes it one of Bucharest’s defining nineteenth-century institutions.
