Reykjavík City Hall

Studio Granda (Margrét Harðardóttir + Steve Christer) · Reykjavík, Iceland · 1992

Reykjavík City Hall by Studio Granda is set directly on the edge of Tjörnin, turning the relationship between civic building, lake and public walkway into its central architectural idea. Inaugurated in 1992, the project combines robust concrete construction with broad glazed surfaces and a more delicate waterside pavilion. The building’s fragmented massing preserves views and pedestrian movement around the pond rather than creating an isolated monumental object. It is a key work of contemporary Icelandic architecture and an important example of civic design shaped by a sensitive urban landscape.
