Reunification Monument
Armand Salomon; Gédéon Mpando; Engelbert Mveng · Yaoundé, Cameroon · 1976
Yaoundé’s Reunification Monument commemorates the political unification of the former French and British-administered territories of Cameroon. A spiraling concrete monument rises above a ceremonial base and is paired with extensive figurative sculpture and decorative work. The project involved architect Armand Salomon, sculptor Gédéon Mpando and artist-intellectual Engelbert Mveng, making it a collaboration between architecture and public art. Completed in the 1970s, the complex is one of Cameroon’s principal post-independence monuments and a major visual symbol of national unity.
