Refugee Museum of Denmark / FLUGT
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) · Oksbøl, Denmark · 2022
The Refugee Museum of Denmark, also known as FLUGT, adapts and extends historic hospital buildings from a former World War II refugee camp in Oksbøl. BIG’s intervention connects the existing brick structures with a curved Corten-steel extension that creates a protected courtyard and a continuous museum route. The project is architecturally restrained but emotionally charged, using preservation and new construction to link historical memory with contemporary questions of displacement and care. Its material contrast between red brick, weathered steel, glass, and forest landscape makes the addition legible without overwhelming the original buildings. For ArchiAtlas, FLUGT is a strong example of adaptive reuse with civic and ethical significance.
