Red Fort

Ustad Ahmad Lahori and imperial workshops · Delhi, India · 1648

Delhi's Red Fort combines defensive walls with a carefully ordered sequence of palace spaces. Monumental gateways lead towards courts, audience halls and more intimate royal pavilions. The contrast between the red sandstone enclosure and refined marble interiors explains how the complex balanced imperial representation with the everyday requirements of a court. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors. The Lahori Gate facade can be seen freely from Netaji Subhash Marg.
