Rani ki Vav

Solanki-period workshops · Patan, India

Rani ki Vav transforms a stepwell into a richly articulated underground architectural sequence. Terraced stairs, columned levels and carved figures accompany the descent towards water. The site reveals the close relationship between hydraulic infrastructure, sacred meaning and craftsmanship in the architecture of medieval Gujarat. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors.
