Radisson Collection Royal Hotel

Arne Jacobsen · Copenhagen, Denmark · 1960

Arne Jacobsen designed Copenhagen’s SAS Royal Hotel as a total work of architecture, interiors, furniture and industrial design. Completed in 1960, the slender high-rise and low podium expressed the international ambitions of post-war Scandinavian modernism while introducing several pieces that became design classics. Its disciplined curtain wall contrasts with Jacobsen’s carefully controlled interior environments. Although many interiors have changed over time, the building remains a key reference for Danish modernism and for the idea of the architect shaping everything from the urban silhouette to the smallest fitting.
