Quiriguá
Maya builders and sculptors (individual architects not recorded) · Los Amates, Guatemala
Quiriguá brings monumental sculpture and civic architecture together within a Maya ceremonial landscape. Its plazas, acropolis remains and carved stone monuments reflect the site's growth during the Classic period, particularly in the eighth century. The tall stelae should be read in relation to the open ground and surrounding building groups rather than as isolated museum objects. The surviving arrangement offers a clear example of how inscription, rulership and spatial organization could reinforce one another within a Maya political centre. Visiting: An archaeological park with ticketed admission. The site developed across several centuries. No single documented completion year applies to this multi-phase historic site.
