Queensland Art Gallery

Robin Gibson · Brisbane, Australia · 1982

Robin Gibson’s Queensland Art Gallery is a low modernist museum organized around water, courtyards and horizontal circulation. Rather than presenting a monumental façade to the city, the building uses shaded concrete volumes and internal landscape elements to create a calm sequence of gallery spaces within Brisbane’s Cultural Centre. The celebrated Watermall makes reflected light and water part of the visitor experience. Opened in 1982, the gallery established the architectural language of the South Bank cultural precinct and remains a key example of climate-conscious Australian public modernism.
