Power Station of Art
TJAD Original Design Studio · Shanghai, China · 2012
Shanghai’s Power Station of Art reuses a former power plant and Expo-era structure as a public contemporary art museum. The conversion preserves the vast industrial scale, exposed structural character and landmark chimney while introducing galleries, circulation and exhibition infrastructure within the existing shell. Rather than erase the building’s previous life, the project uses its oversized interior volumes as a distinctive framework for contemporary art. The museum opened in 2012 and became China’s first state-run museum dedicated to contemporary art, as well as a major example of industrial adaptive reuse on the Huangpu waterfront.
