Portugal Pavilion

Álvaro Siza Vieira · Lisbon, Portugal · 1998

The Portugal Pavilion's suspended concrete canopy gives Lisbon's former Expo grounds one of their clearest architectural spaces. Álvaro Siza designed the pavilion for Expo '98, combining a substantial enclosed building with an outdoor ceremonial area beneath a thin, hanging roof. The apparent lightness of the canopy depends on the contrast with its large supporting elements. Standing beneath it reveals how structure alone can create a strong sense of enclosure without walls. The pavilion is especially effective when approached from the waterfront, where its low horizontal profile provides a counterpoint to the larger developments of Parque das Nações. Visiting: The suspended concrete canopy can be experienced from public space. Interior access depends on exhibitions and events.
