Pinacoteca de São Paulo – Pina Luz
Ramos de Azevedo; Domiziano Rossi · São Paulo, Brazil · 1905
The Pinacoteca's Pina Luz building began as a substantial brick institution associated with Ramos de Azevedo and Domiziano Rossi. Paulo Mendes da Rocha's late twentieth-century intervention transformed circulation and exhibition conditions while making the existing construction more legible. New bridges and altered routes establish different relationships between galleries and former courts. The project is particularly valuable as an example of architectural reuse: the new work gives the museum a clear contemporary organization without concealing the material character of its historic structure. Visiting: Museum admission is normally ticketed, with free days. The brick building was transformed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha in 1998.
