Picasso Museum Málaga
Richard Gluckman; Isabel Cámara; Rafael Martín Delgado · Málaga, Spain · 2003
The Picasso Museum combines Málaga's historic Buenavista Palace with contemporary museum accommodation. Richard Gluckman, Isabel Cámara and Rafael Martín Delgado developed the adaptation and extension that opened in 2003. Rather than isolating the palace as a single restored object, the project works with courtyards, neighbouring buildings and a sequence of new gallery spaces. Stone surfaces, controlled natural light and changes in scale connect the historic fabric with the museum's contemporary requirements. The architectural interest lies in this gradual transition, as visitors move between the older domestic setting and the rooms created for displaying Picasso's work. Visiting: The museum is ticketed, with specified concessions and free periods.
