Phimai Historical Park
Unknown; Khmer royal workshop · Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand · 1100
Phimai preserves one of Thailand's largest and most coherent Khmer temple complexes. Built in stages around the late eleventh and twelfth centuries, it was connected by an imperial road to Angkor and unusually oriented toward the southeast. Enclosing walls and gateways lead to a central sanctuary of pale sandstone, where refined carving and a tall prang create a strong axial climax. Buddhist imagery distinguishes Phimai within the broader Khmer architectural world. Twentieth-century anastylosis reassembled much of the monument, so the present experience combines ancient fabric, archaeological interpretation and modern conservation. The year used here is an approximate anchor for a site whose construction spans multiple reigns and phases.
