Phanom Rung Historical Park
Unknown; Khmer royal workshops · Buriram, Thailand · 1150
Phanom Rung is a Khmer temple complex set on the rim of an extinct volcano in northeastern Thailand. A long processional axis climbs through terraces, naga bridges and gates toward the central sandstone sanctuary, aligning architecture with the mountain landscape and solar events. Carved lintels and pediments depict Hindu narratives associated primarily with Shiva, while the controlled ascent gives the complex exceptional ceremonial drama. Extensive twentieth-century restoration reassembled the monument and recovered many displaced elements. Construction occurred in several phases from roughly the tenth to thirteenth centuries, so the listed year is a representative midpoint rather than a precise completion date. The remote hilltop setting and exposed heat make arrival moderately demanding.
