Pha That Luang
Lao Buddhist builders; later restoration teams · Vientiane, Laos
Pha That Luang places a gilded stupa at the centre of an ordered sacred enclosure. Terraces and repeated surrounding elements give the monument a clear hierarchy as visitors approach. Its present appearance reflects successive restoration campaigns, while its continuing religious and national significance makes the surrounding public setting integral to the architecture. Visiting: A small entry fee applies to the cloister; the golden stupa can be seen freely from the square.
