Perth Concert Hall

Jeffrey Howlett + Donald Bailey · Perth, Australia · 1973

Perth Concert Hall is a robust concrete performance building shaped by the acoustic and spatial requirements of a large concert venue. Jeffrey Howlett and Donald Bailey composed the exterior from deep structural bays, broad terraces and powerful horizontal elements, while the auditorium is celebrated for its clarity and warm timber finishes. The building makes little attempt to conceal its concrete construction, giving it a strong brutalist identity within the civic precinct. Opened in 1973, it remains one of Western Australia’s most important twentieth-century public buildings.
