Peine del Viento
Eduardo Chillida; Luis Peña Ganchegui · San Sebastián, Spain · 1977
Peine del Viento joins sculpture, architecture and the force of the sea at the western end of San Sebastián's bay. Eduardo Chillida's three steel pieces are anchored to coastal rocks, while Luis Peña Ganchegui shaped the terraces and approach that make them a public place. Inaugurated in 1977, the work directs attention to wind, waves and the rough shoreline rather than separating art from its setting. Openings in the pavement intensify this contact with the water below. The route from the promenade to the final stone platforms is an essential part of the experience. Visiting: Open-air public artwork. The final approach can be affected by rough seas and safety closures.
