Paro Taktsang

Traditional Bhutanese builders · Paro, Bhutan · 1692

Paro Taktsang occupies a dramatic ledge above the Paro Valley. Its compact group of roofed buildings is fitted closely to the cliff, making the relationship between built form and terrain especially striking. The long ascent through the landscape gives the final approach a major role in the monastery's spatial and religious experience. Visiting: A substantial uphill walk is required. Temple admission, guide requirements and Bhutan travel arrangements are separate matters to confirm before visiting.
