Parliament House, Darwin

Meldrum Burrows & Partners / Tim Rogers · Darwin, Australia · 1994

Darwin’s Parliament House is designed specifically for a tropical capital, using deep colonnades, shaded façades and controlled openings to limit direct solar exposure while maintaining formal civic presence. The white postmodern composition faces State Square and also accommodates the Northern Territory Library, combining legislative and public programs within one large complex. Meldrum Burrows & Partners, with Tim Rogers closely associated with the design, developed the project during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Opened in 1994, it is Australia’s newest parliament building and a major example of climate-conscious institutional architecture in the tropical north.
