Parliament House, Adelaide

Edmund Wright · Adelaide, Australia · 1939

South Australia’s Parliament House is a monumental neoclassical complex built in stages over several decades. The completed North Terrace façade uses granite and marble, giant columns and a broad symmetrical composition to establish a formal civic presence opposite Adelaide’s central cultural institutions. Although the project originated in the nineteenth century, financial and construction delays meant the present building was not officially opened until 1939. Its long development makes it a useful record of changing state ambitions while its architecture remains strongly tied to traditional parliamentary monumentality.
