Panda House
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) · Copenhagen, Denmark · 2019
Panda House at Copenhagen Zoo is a specialized animal habitat designed as both an enclosure and a public visitor experience. BIG organized the project around the yin-yang diagram, separating the male and female pandas while allowing visitors to move around and between the landscapes. The architecture is mostly experienced through terrain, planting, paths, and curved walls rather than through a conventional building facade. Its design balances animal welfare, operational requirements, and theatrical visibility for zoo visitors. As an architectural stop, Panda House is useful because it shows how BIG’s diagrammatic approach can operate at a smaller scale and within a highly constrained program where circulation, behavior, and landscape are inseparable.
