Panama Canal Administration Building

Austin W. Lord + Mario J. Schiavoni · Panama City, Panama · 1914

Completed alongside the Panama Canal, the Administration Building gives the vast engineering project a monumental institutional headquarters. A symmetrical Renaissance-influenced composition sits prominently on Balboa Heights, reached by a long ceremonial stair and overlooking the canal-zone landscape. Inside, murals depict the construction of the waterway and connect administrative work to the project’s technological mythology. The building is an important architectural record of the canal’s governance and of the planned civic environment created around the new interoceanic infrastructure.
