Palazzo Pubblico, Siena

Sienese civic workshop · Siena, Italy · 1310

Siena's Palazzo Pubblico curves subtly with the edge of Piazza del Campo and remains one of Europe's most coherent medieval civic buildings. A stone ground floor supports ordered brick façades articulated by pointed tripartite windows and crenellations. The Torre del Mangia rises as a separate but integrated vertical landmark, visible across the city and countryside. Inside, council rooms carry fresco cycles including Ambrogio Lorenzetti's allegories of good and bad government, linking architecture directly to civic ethics. The palace continues to house municipal functions as well as a museum. The date marks completion of the principal early campaign, with the tower and decoration following shortly afterward.
