Palau de la Música Catalana
Lluís Domènech i Montaner · Barcelona, Spain · 1908
Lluís Domènech i Montaner's concert hall compresses a remarkably rich public interior into Barcelona's tight medieval street network. Brick, mosaic, carved stone and stained glass form a continuous architectural composition, while an iron structure permits a luminous auditorium beneath its inverted glass skylight. Completed in 1908 for the Orfeó Català, the Palau makes collective music-making visible through its façade and ceremonial spaces. Look for the relationship between its corner sculpture, the glazed foyer and the hall's sculptural stage. Later interventions expanded the institution while preserving the historic auditorium. Visiting: Concert hall interior requires a tour or performance ticket.
