National Palace of El Salvador

Pascasio González Erazo · San Salvador, El Salvador · 1911

The National Palace is a large neoclassical governmental complex organized around internal courtyards and ceremonial halls. Its exterior uses a regular rhythm of columns, pediments and balconies to present state administration as stable and monumental, while richly differentiated interiors supported legislative and executive functions. Now primarily a cultural monument, the building preserves one of the most complete surviving civic interiors in central San Salvador. Its scale makes it a crucial urban counterpart to the cathedral and surrounding plazas.
