Palacio de Bellas Artes

Adamo Boari + Federico Mariscal · Mexico City, Mexico · 1934

Palacio de Bellas Artes records a long construction process spanning the final Porfirian years and the post-revolutionary period. Adamo Boari’s richly sculpted exterior combines Beaux-Arts and Art Nouveau influences, while Federico Mariscal completed much of the interior in an Art Deco language. The marble-clad building houses major performance and exhibition spaces as well as murals by leading Mexican artists. Opened in 1934, it is both a central cultural institution and one of Mexico City’s most recognizable architectural transitions between historicism and modernity.
