Palácio da Alvorada
Oscar Niemeyer · Brasília, Brazil · 1958
Oscar Niemeyer’s presidential residence is one of the earliest completed monuments of Brasília. A glass rectangular volume is wrapped by repeated sculptural white columns, creating a ceremonial colonnade while maintaining an unusual sense of lightness. Set within a broad landscape beside Lake Paranoá, the building translates state representation into an abstract modern language. Its synthesis of structure, proportion and monumental setting became an enduring image of Brazilian modernism and of Niemeyer’s architecture for the new capital.
