Palace of the Republic

Leonid Ukhobotov + Yuri Ratushny + Vladimir Kim + team · Almaty, Kazakhstan · 1970

The Palace of the Republic is a major concert and assembly hall from Almaty’s late-Soviet modernist period. A broad roof appears to hover above deeply recessed glazed walls and structural supports, creating a strong horizontal counterpoint to the surrounding mountains and nearby Hotel Kazakhstan. The generous sheltered perimeter and monumental stair make arrival part of a civic sequence around Abai Square. Opened in 1970, the building demonstrates the ambitious scale and structural clarity of Kazakhstan’s best public modernism and remains one of Almaty’s principal performance venues.
