Palace of Culture and Science
Lev Rudnev · Warsaw, Poland · 1955
Warsaw’s Palace of Culture and Science is a vast socialist-realist high-rise combining offices, theatres, exhibition halls, educational facilities and a viewing terrace within one monumental complex. Lev Rudnev adapted the language of Moscow’s Stalinist skyscrapers with decorative references intended to connect the tower to Polish historical architecture. Completed in 1955 as a Soviet-sponsored gift, the building dominated Warsaw’s reconstructed post-war skyline and remains one of the city’s most politically contested architectural landmarks. Its mixture of vertical office tower and extensive cultural podium makes it a true metropolitan megastructure.
