Palace of Culture, Iași

Ion D. Berindey · Iași, Romania · 1925

Iași’s Palace of Culture is a vast neo-Gothic civic complex built on the site of earlier administrative palaces. Ion D. Berindey organized the building around a tall central tower, symmetrical wings and hundreds of rooms intended for courts and regional government. Decorative stonework, heraldic details and large ceremonial interiors create a deliberately historic image despite the use of modern construction systems. Completed in the 1920s and later converted to house several museums, the palace remains the dominant architectural landmark of central Iași and an important example of Romanian national historicism.
