Oodi Helsinki Central Library
ALA Architects · Helsinki, Finland · 2018
Oodi redefines the central library as an active civic interior rather than primarily a repository for books. Completed by ALA Architects in 2018 opposite Finland’s Parliament, the building stacks distinct public conditions: an open ground-floor urban living room, a middle level for making and shared activities, and a luminous upper reading landscape beneath an undulating roof. A sweeping timber-clad volume gives the library a strong public identity while creating sheltered exterior space. Oodi has become a widely referenced example of contemporary library architecture and inclusive civic programming.
