One World Trade Center
David Childs / SOM · New York, United States · 2014
One World Trade Center, completed in 2014, stands as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Designed by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the skyscraper occupies the northwest corner of the 16-acre World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. Its design incorporates symbolic elements, rising to a height of 1,776 feet, a direct reference to the year the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. The structure is characterized by its tapered, crystalline form, culminating in a spire that contributes significantly to its iconic silhouette. The building's base is clad in a pre-polished stainless steel and glass façade, designed to reflect the surrounding environment. It serves primarily as a commercial office building, anchoring the reconstructed World Trade Center complex.
