Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre
Alexander Grinberg + Traugot Bardt + Mikhail Kurilko; later revisions by project teams · Novosibirsk, Russia · 1945
The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the largest theatre buildings in Russia and the architectural centerpiece of Lenin Square. Its design evolved dramatically during construction: an early constructivist House of Science and Culture scheme was transformed during the 1930s into a more monumental composition, while retaining an extraordinary thin-shell dome over the auditorium. Construction began in 1931, was delayed by war, and the theatre finally opened in May 1945. The finished building therefore records the transition from avant-garde experimentation to Stalin-era monumentality within a single long project.
