Norwegian Glacier Museum

Sverre Fehn · Fjærland, Norway · 1991

Sverre Fehn’s Norwegian Glacier Museum is a low, forceful concrete building set within the dramatic landscape of Fjærland. Opened in 1991, the museum uses a long linear form and angular entrances to mediate between the valley floor, mountains and nearby Jostedalsbreen glacier landscape. Fehn’s characteristic combination of heavy concrete, precise openings and carefully framed views turns the building itself into an interpretation of geology and terrain. It is one of the architect’s most accessible works and a significant example of modern museum architecture embedded in landscape.
