Nonoalco-Tlatelolco Housing Complex
Mario Pani · Mexico City, Mexico · 1964
Designed by Mario Pani, Nonoalco-Tlatelolco was one of Mexico’s most ambitious modern housing projects. Large residential slabs and towers were placed within landscaped open space alongside schools, services and archaeological remains, applying modernist planning principles at metropolitan scale. The complex sought to create a self-contained urban district for tens of thousands of residents. Its later history—including earthquake damage and social change—has made it equally important as a case study in the ambitions, vulnerabilities and long-term adaptation of large post-war housing estates.
