Nishisando Toilet
Sou Fujimoto · Tokyo, Japan · 2023
Nishisando Toilet, designed by Sou Fujimoto, turns a familiar element of washing into an urban-scale architectural gesture. The project is known for its oversized white washbasin-like form, which makes the restroom immediately recognizable while connecting the act of hygiene to the surrounding public realm. Rather than hiding the building, Fujimoto gives it a clear and playful civic identity. The result is a small but memorable piece of infrastructure that communicates cleanliness, openness, and public use through form. Within THE TOKYO TOILET network, Nishisando Toilet demonstrates how a modest municipal facility can become a landmark without becoming monumental. Its minimal geometry and direct symbolic language make it especially effective as an example of architecture that transforms a routine necessity into a shared urban experience.
