Nishihara Itchome Park Toilet

Takenosuke Sakakura · Tokyo, Japan · 2020

Nishihara Itchome Park Toilet, designed by Takenosuke Sakakura, approaches the public restroom as a calm and approachable park pavilion. Its softly illuminated presence gives the structure a lantern-like quality, helping it feel safe and legible within the neighborhood environment, especially after dark. The project responds to one of the central problems THE TOKYO TOILET set out to address: the perception of public toilets as dark, unsafe, or unpleasant. Through a clear architectural form, careful lighting, and a modest scale, the restroom becomes part of the everyday public realm rather than an object to avoid. The design is especially valuable as an example of how small-scale public architecture can improve a park’s atmosphere, support accessibility, and quietly strengthen the relationship between infrastructure and local civic life.
