Ningbo History Museum
Wang Shu + Lu Wenyu / Amateur Architecture Studio · Ningbo, China · 2008
Ningbo History Museum combines monumental mass with a highly tactile envelope assembled from reclaimed brick and tile gathered from demolished regional buildings. Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu shape the upper volume as a fragmented block cut by deep voids and sloping walls, while the lower base relates more directly to the surrounding landscape. The material strategy turns construction waste into a visible record of urban change and local craft. Completed in 2008, the museum became an internationally influential example of contemporary Chinese architecture engaging critically with rapid redevelopment, memory and traditional building techniques.
