Neutrality Arch

Polimeks · Ashgabat, Turkmenistan · 1998

The Neutrality Arch was created as a monumental symbol of Turkmenistan’s declared permanent neutrality. Three large legs support a high observation structure crowned by a golden statue, producing an unmistakable vertical landmark. Originally erected in central Ashgabat in 1998, the monument was dismantled and reconstructed on a new site in 2010, changing both its urban context and proportions. Its unusual history makes the arch an important example of post-Soviet state monumentality in which architecture and political symbolism are closely intertwined. The record uses the original 1998 completion date while explicitly noting the later relocation.
