Nelson-Atkins Museum – Bloch Building
Steven Holl Architects · Kansas City, United States · 2007
Steven Holl's Bloch Building extends the Nelson-Atkins Museum through a sequence of light-filled volumes set into its grounds. Opened in 2007, the addition contrasts with the older museum's formal stone frontage while preserving the importance of the landscape. Much of the gallery programme is integrated with the terrain, leaving luminous elements visible above. Following the route between galleries reveals how changing light and level connect the separate volumes into a continuous museum experience. Visiting: General museum admission is free. Special exhibitions or events may be ticketed.
