Neilson Hays Library

Mario Tamagno · Bangkok, Thailand · 1922

Mario Tamagno designed the Neilson Hays Library as a compact neoclassical pavilion for Bangkok's English-language library association. A symmetrical stucco exterior, columned entrance and tiled roof enclose a calm sequence of reading rooms organized around a central rotunda. High ceilings, deep openings and shaded edges adapt the formal language to the tropical climate, while dark timber shelves give the interior an intimate civic character. Set within a garden in the commercial district, the building offers a rare pocket of quiet and illustrates the cosmopolitan institutions of early twentieth-century Bangkok. A recent conservation campaign repaired the fabric and upgraded services without erasing the library's material identity.
